Hi there, I have a 1992 Johnson v4 outboard that I have a couple questions on. The engine runs great once started but when I start it up it has trouble in low idle. I use the high idle lever to start it, then have to quickly switch into gear when I put the lever down or else it will shut down.#1. I am working on a 1995 50 HP 3 cylinder Johnson outboard. Initially the motor was not firing on the 3rd cylinder. The motor would get up on step and drop rpm and then it would kick in again. Very sporatic. There is good compression in all 3 cylinders. All 3 ignition coils are working. I changed out the timer base.5008328. BRP Marine. TIMING ADJUSTMENTS. Timing Pointer. I was checking and adjusting the timing on my 1996 Evinrude 40HP outboard, Model: E40TELEDS. The adjustment link is "pulled in" to the maximum, and minimum position screw is all the way in. During normal idle, mark is at -2 to -4 degrees, and at WOT its only at +12 degrees.Idle timing for that motor is 0-2 ATDC and speed is 775-825.. Idle RPM is adjusted with the IDLE timing screw, which adjusts the timing at idle only. If you cant get the motor to idle correctly between the 0-2 atdc range then check the carb mixture and engine temp. The key locates the flywheel in the proper relationship to the crankshaft and hence timing cannot get drastically out of spec unless someone has messed with the advance linkage.

The timing fixture makes it possible to get the points set dead-on for ultimate timing accuracy between the magnets passing by the coil and points opening time.
